"I tell my employees as well as myself, and we pray, and we keep God in our hearts and treat people in the best way. Treat them better than we would want to be treated. We love what we do. It's a passion for most of us. Most of us have been working here for years. I've been working around my family's business since I was around 5. A lot of the employees have been here throughout the different changes, the different locations. So, it's a very family-oriented work environment as well." “Sharon and Chef Damian have been major contributors to our city, and their incredible talent has made them an asset to the Tournament of Roses Parade. Between 1958 and 1962, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. even held meetings at the café. The location holds a unique place in Shreveport-Bossier’s history, not only for its food, but also as a hub for civil rights discussions. The restaurant, Orlandeaux’s is one of the oldest continuously operating Black-owned businesses in the U.S. His passion for our culture and commitment to our city is evident in every aspect of his work, and we are thrilled to see him representing us at such a prestigious event.
Lasting for a century is a milestone for any establishment, and Chapman said there are good reasons for the family's dynasty. According to Chapman, the business history reads a lot like the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, with plenty of family tree documentation. It was the most well-known version of the restaurant, according to Damien. Damien’s great-great-great uncles, Jack Harris and Van Freeman, founded the storied restaurant. Damien opened Orlandeaux’s—the latest incarnation, with a “French twist” on the name—in 2021, in the old location for Smith’s Cross Lake Inn, which had been a white-owned restaurant and inn.
